March 14th-17th, 2022—When Klas Haglid, P.E., R.A. of Haglid Engineering & Associates, Inc.® touched down in Dubai, the city’s architecture naturally appealed to his design sensibilities. Honored with an invitation to speak at the first ever World Police Summit, he would recognize the city’s state-of-the-art skyline as the perfect backdrop to the event, which focused on the latest international research, best practices, technical expertise, and innovative technology in law enforcement.

World Police Summit, an exhibition and conference, offered an opportunity for international law enforcement professionals to discuss the future of policing. Hosted by Dubai Police under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, the four-day event involved six conference programs, shows, panels, workshops, and opportunities for MOU agreements.

Due to his extensive forensics engineering experience, Haglid had the pleasure of speaking at the Advances in Forensics Engineering panel at the Forensics Science Conference. The panel, which covered the latest industry knowledge and research, plus state-of-the-art technologies, rounded out the conference goal of covering genetics, toxicology, digital forensics, fire scene investigations, and forensics psychology.

Haglid is passionate about his ability to assist in court cases where components or structural errors in buildings might have caused injuries or property loss. Decades earlier, as part of a Dupont team that discovered a potentially fatal flaw in an airplane engine O-ring design, he realized how critical Forensics Engineering is to daily life. “If you can utilize this skill truly well, you can save lives,” he says.

As for Haglid’s perception of the WPS, highlights beyond his panel experience included an onsite analysis of a burned-out building and witnessing the advanced law enforcement tech available now and on the horizon. But even that paled in comparison to the beautiful hospitality of the show runners, as well as the camaraderie and professionalism of over 2,500 delegates from 70 countries, 150 exhibitors, and 11,000 attendees. Haglid looks forward to attending the WPS again. In the meantime, he hopes to collaborate and trade case studies with the many professionals he had the pleasure of meeting during the event.
