“The 2011 ASHRAE Handbook: HVAC Applications comprises over 60 chapters covering a broad range of facilities and topics and is written to help engineers design and use equipment and systems described in other Handbook volumes.”

“Using EPA’s ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager tool and energy performance rating system to benchmark and rate each school’s energy use, Haglid assisted Hopewell in making operational changes and upgrade decisions that yielded the greatest and most cost-effective energy reductions.”

Two approaches to using Energy Recovery to Improve Overall System Energy Efficiency Rating; Klas C. Haglid, P.E.

Haglid Engineering found a low cost and innovative method to provide fresh air and comfort, while saving energy to the encampment area of the Battleship New Jersey. Mr. Haglid was honored as “Commander.”

Haglid Engineering was able to provide LEEDs Support to receive a LEED Silver Rating and improve occupancy comfort, while saving energy and get a EPA Energy Star Rating! “As one of the leaders of sustainability in Morristown, I believe that ‘sustainability is good for business.’ To prove this, I decided to renovate and achieve a LEED certification. The result has been very amazing. Many people just appreciate the fact that I invested in the neighborhood and the Town of Morristown. The LEED certification has not only helped our bottom line costs but has helped in creating more sales and customer loyalty. -Marty Epstein, Owner of Marty’s Reliable Cycle

Haglid Engineering provided P4P incentives and engineering support for energy savings and provided support for an Energy Star Building Rating! Norman Torkelson, Director of Facilities at the Hopewell Valley Regional Schools and 2008 Recipient of the NJ Clean Energy Educator of the Year, states: “By applying energy recovery technology(s) to our older buildings, the energy savings alone justify the installation of a BPE unit. Additional benefits including improved thermal comfort and indoor air quality, as well as reduced operation and maintenance costs, also create a positive initiative to install more BPE units!”

Haglid Engineering provided energy modeling that saves clients’ money and time! John from O’Dell Associates – working with Excel Heating on system design and installation – states, “By using state of the art BPE energy recovery modules, we can save Chrysalis $1,000 a month and pre-heat the cold outdoor air to 92°F. It makes the Yoga studio more comfortable and saves a lot of energy and money.” Andrew stated, “The BPE units were light enough to install without a crane and saved on installation costs.” The BPE-XE-MIR-2000 units precondition the outside air while improving IAQ and reduce operating costs.

Haglid Engineering performed energy modeling and support to provide a custom measure grant that helped pay for half the cost of a new industrial ventilation system for Chanel! Juoko Tahvanainen, Plant Engineering Manager at Chanel, states there has been a dramatic improvement in comfort accompanied by “some nice energy savings as well.” Mr. Tahvanainen explained that the measurements taken on the exhaust and intake air look very promising. Scott Reilly, Director of Engineering at the facility, said, “We run a tight ship around here, and the BPE units are maintenance free.”

“Haglid Engineers gets even the most complicated project approved by the Smart Starts Program” – Program Engineer

BOMA Award for Building Energy Reduction

The Building Owners and Managers Association’s (BOMA) award for Building Energy Reduction was received by Avidan Management, owners and managers of industrial and commercial real estate. The winning property, 145 Talmadge Road, is a 656,000-square-foot warehouse and office complex in Edison, New Jersey. The reduction plan, designed by Haglid Engineering & Associates, consisted of 17,745 solar panels, a 20,000-cfm BPE Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) system, high-speed doors for refrigeration and freezer areas, controls for a 1,222-ton refrigeration plant, and additional energy-reduction measures. The project successfully retrofitted the building to become a net-power-producing (Net Zero) facility on peak summer days. The retrofit was completed in April 2011 and became the largest roof-top-mounted installation in the country at the time.

EBie Award

The property at 145 Talmadge Rd. Edison, NJ was also nominated for an EBie award. On June 28th, 2011, Mr. Haglid received the award from the USGBC. The EBie is an award presented by the Urban Green Council to those who have made remarkable environmental improvements to existing buildings. The Avidan property was able to be Net Zero, or net power producing, on very hot summer days–even with a 1,222-ton refrigeration plant. This was accomplished by recovering British Thermal Units (Btu) through energy recovery supplied by BPE along with a host of other energy-reduction plans, including a solar panel array. Existing Buildings account for more than one third of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions. Eight-five percent of such buildings are expected to remain in use by 2030, so working toward making them sustainable is vital for future generations. Haglid Engineering & Associates was one of fourteen finalists in a competition that began with sixty-seven entries. Nominated in the “Reformed Gas Guzzler” category, the Talmadge Project is recognized for achieving one of the highest percentages of energy savings!

Urban Green Council Announces the EBies

New Awards for Performance in Existing Buildings

NEW YORK, January 23, 2012 – Urban Green Council, USGBC New York, today announced the EBie Awards™, a new nationwide juried competition that celebrates performance improvements in Existing Buildings (hence the EBies) and the people who made them happen. Their work is likely to have been done on a shoestring budget and needed great tenacity and conviction.

Who are these unsung heroes? The EBies recognize significantly-increased environmental performance in existing buildings among building operators, facilities managers, owners, engineers, retro-commissioning agents, and other professionals who conceived and implemented the work. Focus areas include energy, water, operations, lighting, and landscaping as well as effective-energy-use education.

Why the EBies? There are already important awards that recognize sustainable design in new buildings. However, from an environmental standpoint, the biggest impact lies in improving existing buildings, which comprise 95 percent of America’s building stock. Until the EBies, there was virtually no recognition for this critical sector. The EBies are a perfect way to acknowledge the successes of practitioners in the field who are leading the way to a more energy-efficient future.
